We had a PC that needed XP on it for legacy reasons to drive some equipment. When I had to reinstall, I would come up against this. For a long time, MS was trying to get rid of XP and you couldn’t get new activations anymore.  B ut then last year, voila!, there was a site to get activation codes again.

It came up with an error when I tried to activate it, but I tired again and the message went away so I guess I’m good.

There was a PC in a truck in the oilfield that never got connected to the internet that constantly had the message on the screen that “this version of Windows is not genuine.”

Happened to me yesterday. It’s an issue Microsoft is aware of and will be fixing soon. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/11/some-windows-10-pro-installations-are-being-erroneously-deactivated/

Actually, they don’t have to buy separate copies of Windows. The large oil concerns have an agreement with Microsoft to cover all of their Windows usage regardless of whether or not they actually use their VLKs.

It’s a whole thing every time. “I need your VLK.” “We’re covered.” “I know you are. I’m not. I need your VLK.” “Just say it’s for us, it’s fine.” “I know this, the code doesn’t, please just give me the VLK.” “Fine, but we’ll need a few days to find it again.”

It’s fixed. Just run the activation troubleshooter in settings.

If you have admin access, restart the Software Protection  service as well, then try again.

I had a user report this problem yesterday. I was confused until I saw this.  https://www.pcworld.com/article/3319697/windows/windows-10-activation-problems-november-2018.html
